The Retro Sweet Club

I miss retro sweets (although back in the day, I suppose they were just called sweets). I used to get mine from the post office by my house, with the grumpiest man behind the counter. I don't think I ever saw him smile. I'd run to the shop with my pocket money and a bag of rhubarb and custards would probably last me an entire week, with the white paper bag becoming all gross in my pocket.

Now that Woolworths has closed down (R.I.P, pick 'n' mix stands everywhere), my sweet consumption has reduced rapidly. This needs to change.

The Retro Sweet Club from Sophie Victoria Joy will boost my sweet supplies. Each month, you get 3 different types of sweets (100g of each). It's not super cheap - it's £25 for three months so you pay around £8 per month including delivery. You can choose which sweets you get, which means that I can avoid all of the flying saucers for being totally rubbish (why would I want to eat paper? Why?)

This is such a good Christmas present and actually, I think it would stop me spending so much money on chocolate and sweets. I pop to the shop to get a paper and I come out with three chocolate bars! I'm much less likely to do that if I've got a back of sweets in the house.

Got a favourite retro sweet? What is it? If it's jazzies, then we can't share our pick 'n' mix.

  1. I love Rosebuds, and the Rosebuds of my youth were pale pink boiled sweet spheres with a sugar coating. The Rosebuds of now are more like "satins" and sickly sweet and pink and yellow. I recently managed to track down some that are as close to the ones I remember from a place in Wales. I bought a 3kg jar!

  4. It's a lovely idea but the prices are a bit silly. May I recommend to you the teeth-rotting joy that is http://www.aquarterof.co.uk

It's reasonably priced and have a wide selection (Little Macaroon will be pleased to see they do chocolate limes.)

Another top tip for cheap retro sweets is... Poundland. They sell Jazzies, drumstick lollies and vimto lollies. Yum.

    1. We've written about A Quarter Of, Anon, but I wanted to write about the club itself, rather than just writing about sweets. I like the style of this one.

  5. I can recommend a new Covent Garden shop (soon with online shop too) which is called Sugar Sin. They're on Long Acre, and have an amazing selection of sweets in jars, for pick and mix. They specialise in Swedish sweets, which I love (being Swedish and all) but I'm sure Domestic Sluttery readers from any country will love them too. Check them out! ~ Sara
